Door-to-Door vs Port-to-Port: What Actually Saves Your Cyprus Business More

Port-to-port quotes look cheap on paper but hide the most expensive part of a Cyprus import. Door-to-door is almost always the better B2B choice — here's the proof.

When you ask three freight forwarders for a Cyprus shipping quote, you'll get three numbers that can vary by a factor of two — not because some forwarders are honest and others aren't, but because each one is quoting a different scope. Port-to-port, FOB-to-FOB, door-to-door — each definition includes a different set of charges. The difference matters because for most Cyprus B2B importers, the "hidden" charges that fall outside port-to-port often exceed the freight rate itself.

What each quote scope actually means

Port-to-port

Sea freight only, from origin port to Cyprus port. Everything before the supplier's goods are loaded onto the vessel, and everything after they're discharged at Limassol, is excluded. Common for shipping line direct quotes (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM).

FOB-to-FOB

Includes origin port loading but not origin trucking. Same Cyprus-side gap as port-to-port. Common for Asian-supplier quotes ("FOB Shanghai").

CIF Limassol

Origin trucking + port loading + sea freight + minimum insurance to Limassol port. Cyprus-side handling, clearance, VAT, inland still on you. Common for European supplier quotes.

Door-to-door

Everything: origin pickup → origin export clearance → sea/air freight → Cyprus port handling → customs clearance → duty/VAT calculation → inland delivery to your warehouse address. Single invoice, single point of contact. The model FGA defaults to.

A concrete example — same shipment, four scopes

Shipment: 1 pallet (1 CBM, 500 kg), EU-origin office furniture, Berlin → Nicosia.

Three observations:

  1. The quoted price is the smallest part of the eventual bill. The "cheapest" port-to-port quote (€280) ends up €875 ex-VAT — three times the headline.
  2. All four totals are within ~25% of each other. The "expensive" door-to-door quote is competitive once you add up everything else. Sometimes it's actually cheaper.
  3. The cost of coordination is invisible in the quotes. Port-to-port means you (or someone you hire) must arrange origin trucking, port handling, customs broker, inland trucking — five separate invoices, four separate phone numbers. Door-to-door is one invoice.

Where door-to-door wins beyond pure price

1. Single-point liability

If a port-to-port shipment is damaged at the Cyprus CFS during handling, who pays? The CFS operator says it was already damaged on arrival, the ocean carrier says it was fine when they discharged, your broker shrugs. With door-to-door under one bill of lading, one party is responsible end-to-end.

2. Simplified VAT and accounting

Port-to-port means multiple suppliers invoice you separately — origin truck company, port handler, broker, inland trucker. Each invoice has different VAT treatment. Reconciling that for a Cyprus VAT return takes hours per shipment. Door-to-door is a single invoice with VAT clearly split.

3. Faster clearance through bundled services

Door-to-door forwarders pre-file customs declarations the moment the vessel berths because they have all the documents in one system. Port-to-port often means waiting for the importer to send invoices/packing lists to a separately-hired broker — sometimes a 2-day delay.

4. Predictable transit time

A door-to-door operator commits to a delivery window from supplier door to your address. The port-to-port chain has handoffs at every step where each operator's schedule conflicts can delay the whole shipment.

5. Insurance simplicity

Carrier liability on each leg is different. A door-to-door cargo insurance policy covers the goods continuously, including transitions between carriers. With port-to-port, you have to insure each leg separately or carry the gaps as risk.

When port-to-port can make sense

It's not always wrong. Three scenarios where port-to-port wins:

  1. You already have a Cyprus broker on retainer, in-house team capable of clearance, and your own truck or contracted carrier. If those fixed costs are spread across many shipments, port-to-port is cheaper than re-paying door-to-door fees each time.
  2. You ship containerised FCL with predictable cadence, where a long-term contract with a shipping line beats spot door-to-door pricing on the sea leg.
  3. The origin trucking is genuinely cheaper through your supplier. Some German manufacturers have negotiated trucking rates that beat forwarder spot rates by 15–20%. In that case FOB or FCA from the supplier and a Cyprus-only door-to-door arrangement makes sense.

What to ask when comparing quotes

If you're presented with one quote at €280 and another at €780, don't compare them — they're not the same product. Ask each provider:

  • Does this include origin pickup at the supplier's address?
  • Does this include Cyprus terminal handling?
  • Is customs brokerage included or separate?
  • Is duty and VAT calculation done by you, by them, or by a third broker?
  • Is Cyprus inland delivery included to my address (and what zone)?
  • Is cargo insurance included? At what rate? With what coverage limits?
  • What surcharges aren't yet showing — fuel surcharge, peak season, etc.?

Once both quotes have answers, the right number to compare is the all-in landed cost excluding recoverable VAT to your warehouse address. That's the real cost.

The behaviour that signals a good forwarder

A forwarder you can trust will:

  • Volunteer all charges in the first quote (they don't wait for you to ask)
  • Separate duty (real cost) from VAT (recoverable) clearly
  • Tell you when door-to-door is more expensive than what you can self-arrange (it sometimes is)
  • Have direct API integrations with carriers (live rates, not spot enquiries)
  • Quote in your currency without buried FX margins

Door-to-door isn't always the cheapest, but it's the most predictable and the most accountable. For most Cyprus B2B importers below ~30 shipments per year, it's the right default.
